George Lucas will open a
museum of narrative art in
2026.
Los Angeles – “Star Wars” creator George
Lucas has big plans beyond the world of
film: The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is
scheduled to open in Los Angeles in
September 2026. Together with his wife,
Mellody Hobson, Lucas intends to
celebrate the art of storytelling there –
from classical painting and comic book
illustrations to film art.
The futuristic building in Exposition Park
was designed by Chinese architect Ma
Yansong. Its flowing, organic forms are
reminiscent of a spaceship and reflect
Lucas’s love of the fantastical. The
museum, spanning approximately 30,000
square meters, will house more than
40,000 works, including pieces by Norman
Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, and original artwork
from the “Star Wars” saga.
Lucas describes his project as a "temple of
the people's art." The goal is to elevate art
forms often considered popular to the
same level as classical art. With the new
museum, he wants to demonstrate that
films, comics, and illustrations can also tell
universal stories about humanity.
With its opening in 2026, Los Angeles will
gain another cultural landmark—at the
intersection of art, pop culture, and
storytelling tradition.

Museum für erzählende Kunst
Los Angeles. – „Star Wars“-Schöpfer
George Lucas plant Großes jenseits der
Filmwelt: Im September 2026 soll in Los
Angeles das Lucas Museum of Narrative
Art eröffnen. Gemeinsam mit seiner
Ehefrau Mellody Hobson will Lucas dort
die Kunst des Geschichtenerzählens
feiern – von klassischer Malerei über
Comic-Zeichnungen bis hin zu Filmkunst.
Das futuristische Gebäude im Exposition
Park stammt vom chinesischen
Architekten Ma Yansong. Seine
fließenden, organischen Formen erinnern
an ein Raumschiff und spiegeln Lucas’
Liebe zum Fantastischen wider. Auf rund
30.000 Quadratmetern entsteht ein
Museum mit mehr als 40.000 Werken,
darunter Werke von Norman Rockwell,
Frida Kahlo und Originale aus der „Star
Wars“-Saga.
Lucas beschreibt sein Projekt als „Tempel
der Kunst des Volkes“. Ziel sei es,
Kunstformen, die oft als populär gelten,
auf eine Ebene mit der klassischen Kunst
zu stellen. Mit dem neuen Museum will er
zeigen, dass auch Filme, Comics und
Illustrationen universelle Geschichten
über Menschlichkeit erzählen können.
Mit der Eröffnung 2026 erhält Los Angeles
ein weiteres kulturelles Wahrzeichen – an
der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Popkultur und
Erzähltradition.
